Fraction and Mixed Number Computation Review

In class students review the various algorithms to add, subtract, multiply and divide both fractions and mixed numbers.

Afterwards, students played a game of bingo as a form of review.

The handout is attached below and there is no homework.

Dividing Fractions

In class, we learned how to divide fractions. Remember, division is the opposite of multiplication and, with fractions, we can "Leave, Change, Flip" to evaluate an expression.  "Leave, Change, Flip" means to multiply by the reciprocal.  Upon returning from break, we will be reviewing how to use the orders of operations (P.E.M.D.A.S.) to evaluate expressions with fractions.

Below is an example of how to use the "Leave, Change, Flip" method to divide.

        6           ÷          2                                          2/3            ÷          3/4

Leave, Change, Flip                                       Leave, Change, Flip

        6           x          1/2                                        2/3         x            4/3

                    3                                                                     8/9

Muliplying Mixed Numbers

In class students learned how to multiply mixed numbers.  Students must remember to first convert all mixed numbers to improper fractions before multiplying.

The homework is listed below and the notes are attached.

Multiplying Fractions

In class students learned how to multiply whole numbers by fractions, as well as, how to multiply a fraction by a fraction.  Remember we use the word "of" when multiplying fractions.  Finally, remember that whenever we multiply two fractions the product is always less than the two factors.

The notes are attached and the homework is listed below.

Quiz - Adding/Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers

In class students took a quiz on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.  If you haven't read pgs. 250-251 on multiplying fractions, do so for homework.

Quiz Review-Adding and Subtracting Fractions

In class students played a game of Jeopardy to review for the quiz on Tuesday.

The homework is a quiz review which is attached below.

Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers

In class students learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers.  Students also learned there are situations where they will need to borrow/regroup when subtracting mixed numbers.

The homework is listed below and the notes are attached.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

First off, welcome back from vacation and I hope everyone had a nice break.

During class students learned how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.  We worked on two different methods to add/subtract fractions and students need to choose the method that works best for them.

The notes and homework are attached below.
