Adding Integers

In class student learned how to add integers using the number line, as well as, add integers using +/- chips.  We also took time to write verbal phrases to represent situations involving integers (ex. temperature, bank accounts, golf, atoms).

The notes are attached and there is no homework.

Transformations (2)

In class students continued working on transformations.  Students were introduced to rotations.  Rotations are a movement around a point and the point we use the origin (0, 0).  Remember, for rotations, the x and y values always flip.

The class notes are attached and the homework is listed below.

Transformations (1)

In class students were introduced to transformations.  Students should be familiar with the vocabulary words congruent, which means same size and same shape, as well as vertex, which is the point at which where two lines meet.

In class, we covered two transformations, a translation or movement of an object, and a reflection, or mirror image of an object.

The notes will be attached to the next post when completed and the homework is attached below.

HW - Translations and Reflections

Also, below is a youtube video clip of the Ohio State Marching Band using translations to create video game characters.

The Coordinate Plane

In class, students took their first quiz on exponents, number properties and the order of operations.

Afterwards, students were introduced to the coordinate plane and learned how to graph, as well as, locate points on a graph.

The notes and homework are attached. There is also 2 pages of reading to do for next class (pgs. 608-608)

Introduction to Integers/Quiz Review

In class students were introduced to integers and some new vocabulary words including integers, absolute value and opposites.

Afterwards, we played bingo as a way to review for the quiz on Friday.

Order of Operations

In class student learned how to use the order of operations (PEMDAS) to evaluate numerical expressions.  Afterwards, students, on their own, evaluated a number of expressions using the order of operations.

The homework and notes are attached below.

Number Properties

In class we reviewed exponents.  We reviewed the language used when talking about exponents as well as a little history (Archimedes from Syracuse, Italy).

Afterwards, students were introduced to three number properties that they will need to be familiar with going forward which are as follows:  The Commutative Property, the Associative Property and the Distributive Property.

The notes are attached and the homework is listed below.

Notes - Exponents and Number Properties

HW - Pg. 24 (45-55)
          Read pgs. 18-21

Exponents

In class students learned about exponents.  Students should be able to identify the base, exponent, and power.  Students should also know that "two squared" means "two to the second power" and "three cubed" means 'three to the third power."

The notes will be attached to the next post when completed.  The homework is listed below.

HW - Read pgs. 22-23 in the textbook.

Math Vocabulary

In class students reviewed the various words for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Pay close attention to the following words:  sum for addition, take away and difference for subtraction, product, times and of for multiplication and quotient for division.

The notes are attached below and there is no homework.
