Subtracting Integers Cont.

In class, we reviewed how to use visuals (integer chips and the number line) in order to add and subtract integers.  Students then took a brief assessment showing they had mastered the skill.

Afterwards, as a class, we came up with the rules for subtracting integers and learned that we can re-write any subtraction problem as an addition problem by just adding the opposite.  The following s an example:

                                                         5 - (-7)
                                                         5 +  7          - the opposite of -7 is 7.
                                                            12

...and this should make sense to students as the difference (subtraction) between 5 and -7 is 12, or visually, 5 and -7 are 12 spots apart on the number line.

The homework is listed below and the notes are attached.

Subtracting Integers

In class students learned one of the most difficult skills in the 6th grade curriculum: subtracting integers.

When subtracting integers, students should:

                                         1) See if the expression works using the word "take away" and, if so,
                                             use integer (+/-) chips.

or (if the above does not work)

                                         2) Find the "difference" between the two digits by:

                                                         a.  Determining the sign (+/-) of the number

                                                         b.  Use the number line to find the difference

Afterwards, students finished a classwork activity.

The homework and class notes are attached below.

Golf Outing

In class students went to the MPH country club to play 2 rounds of miniature golf.  For homework, finish the back part of the classwork.  For those who were absent, I will catch you up next class.

Histograms

In class students reviewed mean, median, mode and range.  Afterwards, students learned how to construct a histogram.  As we finished up class, students were collecting class data in order to calculate a variety of statistics and create a number of different displays.

The homework and notes are attached below.

Basic Statistics cont.

In class students played "integer war" with playing cards to improve their understanding of adding integers.  Afterwards students reviewed the various statistics for quantitative data including mean, median, mode and range.  We will continue working on the topic next class.

There is no homework.

Basic Statisitics

In class students took Quiz #2 on Transformations and Adding Integers.  Afterwards, students began reading about basic statistics for quantitative data: mean, median, mode and range.

The homework is listed below

HW - Read pgs. 288-289 and 291-293
          Complete pg. 290 (1-4, 15)

Adding Integers (cont.)

In class students played a review game for the quiz that will be administered on Wednesday 10/8.
Attached below is the homework which is a quiz review.
